Can people of the opposite sex become best buddies without something complicated coming in between them in the end?

Cryswal of BlogHer gives an  honest opinion on what guy-girl friendships are really like:

As the guy on the TV screen wrestled with his uncooperative bowtie, he looked in the mirror toward the barrier a few feet behind him, where his best friend was busy putting on her dress. “I know guy-girl friendships can be complicated, but I’m here, if you ever want to talk.”

Hold up. Where’s the pause button?

Man, what I would’ve done to jump through the screen right then, toss confetti over his head, and shout, “Congratulations! You just won the Understatement of the Year award.”

Heart Ties

The funny thing is, there was a time I wished that weren’t true. I loved hanging out with my guy friends. Loved curling up under their arms for shelter. Loved laughing over our inside jokes. I even loved those rare sweet and sentimental moments they’d probably totally deny having if anyone else asked.

There’s just one problem. Being that close with someone of the opposite sex gets, well, complicated. Even if we don’t want to admit it. Actually, probably even more so when we don’t want to admit it.

Because when you share a best friend level of intimacy with someone, you’re giving him/her a piece of your heart. And let’s be honest, those heart ties—whether intentionally made or not—are pretty darn painful to break.

Live & Learn

If I were to ask how many of us have been there, I bet there wouldn’t be a hand down. It definitely falls into the live-and-learn category, for sure. I think that’s one of the reasons we connect so well with Emma Matthews from the Unveiled Series. We’ve lived her story.

I love that about realistic fiction. It resonates. Don’t get me wrong. I enjoy the gushy stuff too. It’s part of what makes romance so much fun to read and write. But it’s definitely not the whole story. Love can be kind of a raw journey. One that’s filled with its share of live-and-learn moments.

When we join characters in that kind of romance, we’re not just sharing in a few sweet words written on a piece of paper. We’re reliving words already written on our hearts.

Which is exactly what happens each time I read Light Unshaken, and why I’m absolutely thrilled you get to join Emma in this inspiring journey about real love, costly choices, and the courage to fight for what you believe in. Share on Twitter

What Do You Think?

Whether or not you’ve read the book already, I’d love to know what you think? Can guys and girls be best friends without romantic feelings cropping up and heart ties forming? What’s been your experience?

And if you’ve already read the story, I gotta ask. Are you a team A. J. or Team Riley fan? Readers’ reactions to these two guys always crack me up. If you’re a die hard fan of one over the other, tell me why in the comments. I’m choosing immunity!!

It’s real. It has to be. Twenty-two-year-old college student Emma Matthews gained too much ground last year for it all to be a dream. She has an engagement ring on her finger to prove it. Not to mention an internship she’s made for.

After a summer of overcoming her fears, Emma can’t afford for the news she just received to shake her. Not when it might jeopardize her future with Riley. And not when the kids in downtown Portland are counting on her to keep the center’s doors open. With the added strain of a broken relationship and an unexpected friendship reminding her what’s at stake, what other choice does she have?

But as mounting danger compromises her safety, friction intensifies until the risk of keeping her promise threatens all she’s fought to believe. Caught in a moment when every light in her life goes out, Emma must find the courage to lead her heart no matter what it costs her.
